MicroDuck is exactly the kind of product that can make you buy first and think later.

You see it walking.

Then you see it roller-skating.

Then you see it pick something up.

Then you see the $399 price.

And suddenly:

"Okay, where do I preorder?"

I get it.

But if I'm about to spend $399 on a robot, I'd still stop for a few minutes first.

Not because I think MicroDuck is a bad purchase.

I actually think the price is interesting.

I just want to make sure I'm buying the robot that exists, rather than the robot I've imagined in my head.

1. What exactly comes in the box?

The standard MicroDuck package currently includes:

  • MicroDuck
  • battery
  • USB-C cable
  • game controller

The accessory pack includes things like rollers, a ball, a laser pointer and NFC tags.

This matters because it's easy to see an impressive product video and assume everything shown is included.

It isn't.

I'd check the package contents before ordering, especially if the thing that made you want MicroDuck was one of the accessories.

2. How much is the robot really going to cost me?

That's the number you're going to see everywhere.

But your actual total depends on where you're ordering from and whether you add accessories.

For example, the Charger Pack is currently $39, while the Dev Pack is $119 and the Accessory Pack is $39. (Pollen Robotics)

You don't need any of those to start.

I'd resist the urge to build a $600 cart just because every extra pack looks interesting.

Start with the robot.

Add things because you actually want them.

3. Make sure you understand the preorder

This is not the same as buying an in-stock gadget from Amazon.

And the launch demand has been much stronger than expected.

Hugging Face reported more than $2.6 million in orders during the first 24 hours, while later reporting indicated that delivery estimates for newer orders had moved to roughly four to six months.

So before ordering, I'd check the current delivery estimate shown at checkout rather than relying on an old screenshot or launch article.

4. Ask yourself what you expect it to do

This is probably the most important check.

If you're expecting:

"A cute little robot that can move around and give me things to play with."

That matches the current product much better.

If you're expecting:

"A fully autonomous AI assistant that remembers everything, handles my work and manages my home."

That's a completely different expectation.

But it doesn't make the robot a general-purpose household assistant.

Don't buy a future idea by accident.

5. Check whether the physical part is actually what you want

This is easy to overlook.

If you mainly want to talk to an AI, a phone or computer may simply be better.

The reason to buy MicroDuck is partly that it's physical.

It moves.

It occupies space.

You can interact with a real object.

That should sound exciting to you.

If it doesn't, I wouldn't spend $399 just because everyone is talking about it.

6. Don't let "open source" confuse you

So if you're thinking:

"I'll just build the whole robot myself."

that's not what you're buying.

If you're thinking:

"I want a robot whose software I can explore and customize."

that's much closer to the actual proposition.

7. Think about where you would actually use it

This sounds silly until you get home with a robot.

Where does it go?

On your desk?

On the floor?

In your home office?

Do you have enough open space for it to move?

Will your pets knock it over?

Will you worry about it falling?

Will you actually want it moving around while you're working?

Think about your actual space.

8. Decide how much "DIY" you want in your purchase

This one is especially important.

MicroDuck can be as simple as:

controller + built-in behaviors + play

or much deeper:

simulation + training + customization

The second experience is obviously more technical.

You don't need to know which one you'll become before buying.

But you should know what you're signing up for.

If you want a completely finished appliance, I'd be cautious.

If you enjoy products that give you room to explore, that's a different story.

9. Don't assume every demo represents an everyday experience

This is something I would do with any new robot.

Watch the demos.

Then ask:

"What am I seeing because this is a carefully prepared demo?"

and:

"What would happen if I owned it?"

That's not cynicism.

It's just good buying behavior.

A robot can perform a very impressive five-second action without being useful for an hour.

10. Finally, ask yourself one question

This is the question I'd use before ordering:

"If MicroDuck turns out to be exactly as capable as it is today, would I still be happy that I spent $399?"

That's a much better question than:

"What could it eventually become?"

Because you are buying the robot that exists now.

If you already find that robot exciting, great.

If you're only excited because you're imagining ten other capabilities that aren't there yet, I'd slow down.

My take

I actually like the $399 proposition.

The hardware is interesting.

The robot is unusually fun to look at.

The physical behaviors are real.

But I wouldn't buy it because someone told me:

"This is the future."

I'd buy it because:

"I like this robot as it exists today, and I think I'd enjoy having it around."

That's a much safer reason to spend the money.

And honestly, it's probably the only reason that really matters.
